The Dutch tax side fully taken care of
When you export a car with Dutch plates, you can reclaim the remaining BPM from the Dutch tax authorities through a BPM refund (a refund of the Dutch registration tax, BPM). The refund is based on the market value of the vehicle at the time of export and the age of the car. The older the car, the lower the remaining BPM and so the refund. Marlog handles the application.
At the same time as, or ahead of, the export, Marlog deregisters your car with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) under an export registration. You receive a certificate of indemnity (the Dutch ‘vrijwaring’), proving you are no longer liable for fines or damage involving the vehicle on Dutch roads.
For export outside the EU, a customs export declaration is mandatory. This declaration confirms the official export, is required for the 0% VAT rate and forms the basis for the BPM refund. We draw up the export declaration and archive the necessary documents.

RoRo or container, which suits you?
From Rotterdam and Antwerp you have a choice of two shipping methods. The right choice depends on your destination, the type of car and the level of protection you want.
RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off)
The car is driven on and off a dedicated RoRo vessel under its own power. This is the most common and cost-effective method for most destinations. Suitable for running vehicles in good condition.
Container
Your car travels in a sealed container, secured with straps. This method offers extra protection and is recommended for exclusive, non-running or sensitive vehicles. Available as a sole or shared container.

Frequently asked questions about car export
For export outside the EU you’ll need at least parts I and II of the Dutch registration certificate. Marlog handles the RDW export (deregistration from the Dutch vehicle register) and arranges a certificate of indemnity. We also draw up the mandatory customs export declaration, which is required for the 0% VAT rate and for the BPM refund. Depending on the destination country, additional documents may be required, such as an export certificate or a certificate of origin. We let you know which documents apply in your situation.
The lead time depends on the destination country and the shipping method. Export within Europe is generally faster than intercontinental destinations. For destinations in the Middle East or Africa, expect a process of several weeks, including the sea voyage and customs clearance. For countries such as the United States or Australia, the sea voyage alone can take four to six weeks. With your quote, we give you a realistic time estimate based on current sailing schedules and local lead times.
With RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) shipping, the vehicle is driven onto and off the vessel under its own power. This is the most common and cost-effective shipping method.
With container shipping, your vehicle is secured inside a shipping container, providing additional protection during transit. This makes it an ideal option for classic cars, high-value vehicles, or non-running vehicles.
Yes. Marlog works with local agents in the destination countries who handle customs clearance on the ground. They know the local import rules, file the required documents and guide the release of your vehicle. Import duties and local charges are payable by the recipient and can vary widely from country to country. We inform you in the quote about the expected costs at the receiving end, so there are no surprises on arrival.
Yes. Marlog Car Handling works for private individuals as well as for traders and dealers with larger volumes. For multiple vehicles, we discuss the options for consolidation: several cars on the same RoRo vessel or in the same container, which can reduce the cost per vehicle.
