// Two ways to ship a car

Which shipping method is best for your vehicle?

There are two ways to ship a car internationally by sea. The right choice depends on your vehicle, destination, budget, and the level of protection required. Marlog will advise you on the most suitable option.

RoRo shipping

RoRo shipping

With RoRo shipping, the vehicle is driven onto the vessel and driven off again upon arrival. Suitable for all operational vehicles.

Fast, efficient, and the most cost-effective shipping method.

Container shipping

Your vehicle is secured inside a shipping container for the ocean crossing. Ideal for classic cars, vintage vehicles, and non-running vehicles.

The safest shipping method, with minimal risk of damage or theft.

Cost factors when shipping a car

The cost of shipping a car depends on several factors. Below are the most important considerations, so you know what to expect when requesting a quotation.

Vehicle: weight & dimensions

The larger or heavier the vehicle, the higher the shipping costs. Electric vehicles may require additional measures, which can also affect the price.

Route & distance

Longer routes generally result in higher shipping costs. The port of departure also plays an important role. Shipping from the west coast of the United States, for example, is more expensive than shipping from the east coast due to the greater distance.

Shipping method

RoRo is typically the most cost-effective option. Container shipping offers additional protection but comes at a higher price. Marlog will advise you on the shipping method that best suits your vehicle and budget.

Season & fuel costs

Shipping rates can vary depending on the season. Fuel surcharges are often passed on to the customer and may influence the total transport costs.

Which documents do you need when shipping a car?

Having the correct documentation is essential when shipping a car internationally. While the basic requirements are largely the same for most countries, additional documents may be required depending on the country of origin.

Generally required:

  • Vehicle registration documents and proof of ownership
  • Any applicable insurance documents
  • Purchase invoice or sales agreement

Specific requirements for shipments from the United States:

  • Certificate of Title — contains the VIN, license plate number, and ownership details
  • Electronic Export Information (EEI) — mandatory for exports valued above USD 2,500

Always seek advice in advance regarding the exact documentation required for your specific route. This helps prevent delays and unnecessary costs.

frequently asked questions about car shipping

With RoRo (roll-on/roll-off), the car is driven onto the ship under its own power and secured on a vehicle deck for the crossing. That’s usually the most cost-effective option for cars in running condition. With container shipping, the car travels inside a closed container, on its own or shared with other vehicles. That offers more protection and is the logical choice for valuable, fragile or non-running cars. A shared container is often a good compromise between price and protection. We advise per situation which method fits and arrange transport insurance for the sea voyage.

Shipping from North America typically takes between 3 and 5 weeks at sea, excluding inland transport and customs procedures. The exact transit time depends on the route and sailing schedule. Marlog provides a clear delivery estimate with every quotation.

Transport costs are only part of the total cost of importing or exporting a vehicle. You should also take into account import duties, VAT, customs charges, transport insurance, and possible RDW-related costs. Marlog provides a detailed quotation so you have a complete overview of all expected costs.
